2010 Boerewors Championship Regionals
The battle for the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors crown is heating up!
83 Regional winners have been selected during regional rounds that took on 14, 21 and 28 August at selected locations countrywide during August.
The popular competition drew more than a thousand entries this year. The boerewors-lovers of Gauteng really seem fired up with a whopping 322 entries validated for the province, with 218 and 102 regional round participants coming from the Western Province and KwaZulu-Natal respectively. Eastern Cape and Free State shows shared enthusiasm with 81 and 84 entries correspondingly, closely followed by Mpumalanga with 75, Limpopo with 61, and North West with 63 entries each. Last, but definitely not least, the Northern Cape, home to the reigning Boerewors Champion, Elizabeth Lesley, produced 42 entrants who will take each other on in the regional rounds.
An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) judged each regional round where prospective Boerewors Champions had to braai 1 kg of their own-recipe boerewors that was judged raw and cooked.
Chef Martin Kobald, Honorary Past President of South African Chefs’ Association, says that the South African Chefs’ Association (SACA) is delighted to be involved in this nationally acclaimed culinary event once again: “The Championship Boerewors competition grows in stature and popularity every year, and the SACA judges cannot but join in the excitement of the search for yet another traditional boerewors recipe innovation. The SACA accredited judging panel looks forward to critiquing the same high standard of ingredient and flavour combinations as exhibited in past successful years of the cookery challenge.”
Participants needed to go all out to impress the judges with their boerewors skills as only the first place winner of each regional round goes on to battle it out against their provincial counterparts in ten provincial rounds that take place on Saturday, 18 September.
The highlight of the competition is the Grand Finale at Sun City on 2 October 2010 where all ten provincial finalists go for gold in a last bid to determine who will wear the Boerewors Crown. Finalists will enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City, including transport, tickets to Skouspel and accommodation.
The 2010 winning recipe will be on the shelves of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores by 14 October.
Shoprite Checkers is renowned for the excellent quality of the meat available at their Meat Markets and they are continuously looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer customers the best. The group presents the Championship Boerewors challenge annually to assist them in achieving that goal.
Shoprite and Checkers’ Championship Boerewors must be a traditional boerewors and must contain at least 90 percent meat - always containing beef, as well as lamb or pork or a mixture of lamb and pork, and the fat content of the meat mixture may not exceed 30 percent. Furthermore, the boerewors should be flavoured with a variety of spices like coriander, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper as well as fluids like vinegar, water and Worcester sauce to create a truly delicious taste.
