THE SHOPRITE COMMUNITY NETWORK

Shoprite continuously strives to make a difference in everything we do – whether it’s through low prices or by contributing to community upliftment. We realise that there are many organisations that desperately need funds but often go unseen. With this campaign, we call on the public to help us find these establishments, so we can help their efforts to contribute to our society.

How it works

The Community Network collaborates with 11 regional radio stations, broadcasting a call for locals to nominate needy non-profit organisations once a month. We make a selection from all the nominees, donating to one cause from each station. The selected community projects are given aid to the value of R10 000, with the type of assistance depending on their specific needs or requirements.

One of the best parts of this initiative is that it places power in various communities’ hands by allowing them to nominate projects in their very own region. Radio stations we’ve broadcasted on include:

The network’s impact

Founded in 2005, we’ve donated millions of rands to various causes – essentially helping those who help others. Themes have varied from one month to the next, giving different types of community upliftment programmes and clubs a chance to benefit from the donations. People who have been affected include the homeless, orphans, schools, old age homes, those suffering from chronic illnesses or disabilities, as well as HIV positive mothers. One month was even devoted to sports clubs in need.

Helping schools

The Knysna Education Trust is just one of the many worthy causes who benefited from the programme. This community project helps pre-schools in disadvantaged areas by providing educational equipment, training for teachers and parents, as well as feeding schemes for the pupils. Their focus on early childhood could make all the difference in a child’s development, helping them towards a more successful future. Their R10 000 went to food parcels for preschools without feeding schemes. The trust was incredibly thankful, saying that the initiative helped them make a difference in the children of Knysna’s lives.
