Oliver Kritzinger Crowned 2016 Championship Boerewors Winner.
Every year, Shoprite & Checkers embark on a nationwide search for the country's best boerewors. This year's Championship Boerewors competition saw hundreds of ordinary South Africans and professional butchers enter their recipes in hopes of being crowned the 2016 boerewors champion.
With the help of the country's best chefs and members of the South African Chefs Association, those entries were whittled down during regional Champion Rounds that took place in KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng before the top 3 from each region had to battle it out at the Top 18 round that took place at the Route 44 Market in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.
Once the judges chose the top 3 boerewors recipes in South Africa, the final decision was left to you, the people of Mzansi who had the opportunity to buy, braai and vote for your favourite to become our next Championship Boerewors.
Keeping in mind that boerewors is such a proudly South African tradition and with National Heritage Day around the corner, it was truly fitting that the Winner’s Announcement took place on one of our country's most important heritage sites, Robben Island.
It was an exciting and eventful day on the island that culminated in an historic touch rugby match between our Olympic medal-winning SA Rugby Sevens team and a team of media personalities in aid of charity.
After the rugby match our 3 finalists (Olivier Kritzinger, Winter Reaobaka and Vukile Vincent Cele) and everyone who attended watched with bated breath as Justin Geduld kicked a golden rugby ball over the posts to reveal Olivier Kritzinger as the winner.
Olivier walks away, not only the new owner of a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Double Cab, but proud 2016 Boerewors Champion knowing that his recipe will be the 2016 Championship Boerewors, South Africa's best selling boerewors and the only boerewors to braai this Heritage Day.
The NEW Championship Boerewors is now available in all Shoprite stores nationwide so be sure to grab a pack on your next visit to your local Shoprite.
